Search Engine Journal has a piece on how AI search is changing a website's job, not replacing it. The point applies directly to trade businesses. AI assistants can now summarise, compare, and sometimes recommend a business without a person ever visiting its actual website.
What an AI assistant actually checks
When an AI assistant is asked to find and summarise options for a trade job, it leans on a narrow set of signals. It does not read an entire website.
- Accurate, specific facts that are stated clearly on the site, rather than implied or buried in a long paragraph
- Reviews, which carry more weight in an AI summary than most businesses expect
- Pages that are keyword heavy but fact light tend to be skipped over, since there is little concrete information for the tool to extract
The practical habit worth starting
A simple, low-cost habit is worth building. Spend ten minutes occasionally asking an AI assistant the kinds of questions a customer might ask about your trade and area. Then check whether your business comes up, and whether what it says about you is accurate.
If your business does not appear, or the summary is wrong or outdated, that is a direct signal. Something needs fixing on your Google Business Profile or your own site. Your website's job has shifted. It used to be the only place a decision got made. Now it is one of several sources an AI tool checks before making a recommendation. That makes accuracy and specificity more important, not less.
